Welcome to the Fly fishing Traditions Schools Site

Fly Fishing Traditions is proud to release an ambitious schedule of schools, workshops and clinics to advance your fly fishing skills.Fly Fishing Traditions is offering for the 2012 season weekend schools led by experienced foothill sierra guides. These schools will deliver the experience and confidence to explore our Northern California waters. The schools will be taught on the water and in the classroom on location. The seasoned instructors provide students with hands on instruction on location on our rivers, streams and stillwaters, on the water. The fly fishing schools are broken down into multiple workshops that focus on the techniques that you will need.For the 2012 season we are currently offering four different schools. All schools are two days with everything lunches, snacks and beverages. All you need to bring is your fishing gear and a valid California fishing license. Gear can be provided if requested.

Stillwater School

The Stillwater School will be conducted on a public stillwater, Lake Davis and/or Frenchmans Lake. The school is designed for anglers in all stages of fly fishing who wish to learn stillwater techniques. This school is modeled after Rowley’s Stillwater school. The student will learn proper casting techniques, reels, fly lines, knots, leaders, flies, and setting up their rods. The school will cover lake profiling, proper equipment, safety concerns and fly fishing etiquette.

Switch Rod School.

The Switch Rod School is conducted on the Lower Yuba River. In this two day course the students will work on trout and steelhead skills using only a switch rod. The students will learn techniques such as the dead drift indicators, tight line nymphing, two handed casts like the snap-tee, single and double spey, snake roll and the perry poke. The Switch Rod School will give the students the confidence, skills and knowledge to tackle trout and steelhead with a switch rod anywhere in Northern California. The two day schools also gives the students crucial one on one time with the instructors. The course is designed for the intermediate to advanced students.

Small Stream Trout School


The Small Stream Trout School will be conducted on the North Fork Yuba River. The school will focus on the skills you need to explore our Northern Sierra small streams. We will teach our students how to fish pocket water and small stream runs and pools using upstream dry and nymph presentaions, high sticking as well as tight line European nymphing methods.


This Trout School is designed for anglers who are novice to intermediate anglers. The student will learn proper casting techniques, reels, fly lines, knots, leaders, flies, and wading. Rigging rods for small streams will be covered. The two day school allows students to spend quality one on one time with the instructors and plenty of time to practice their new found skills.

Tail Water School

The Tailwater Trout School is conducted on the Lower Yuba River. This two day school will focus on all the techniques you will need to have at your disposal to fish a tailwaters. You will learn how to read water, rigg properly and how to present your flies effectively in a variety of water types. This school will include wade fishing and drifting in a drift boat.

School Details

All schools are taught by one instructor per every two enrolled students. The cost is $450 per student for each of the the two day schools.

  • Rods, reels, flies, leaders, and indicators are will be provided if requested.

  • Riverside or lakeside lunches, snacks, and beverages are provided.

  • Students are responsible for their own lodging and meals except for riverside or lakeside Lunches.

  • Students are encouraged to bring their own equipment if they wish.

  • Educational materials will be provided as hand outs for all schools.

  • All schools will include on-site Power Point Presentations in a classroom environment.
